When Mailgun is the right choice

  • You send around 10,000 emails a month. Basic at $15 is the lowest price for that volume here.
  • You want a dedicated IP at 100,000 a month. Foundation 100k includes one for $75.
  • You want built-in email validation as part of the same plan (5,000 on Scale).
  • You want live chat and phone support, which Mailgun includes on Scale.

Groundmail tends to fit when you send 50,000 or more on shared IPs, want a larger free plan to build against, or want a provider whose shared pool carries transactional mail only. The full side-by-side is in Groundmail vs Mailgun.

Switching from Mailgun

Mailgun takes form fields with basic auth on a per-domain URL (POST /v3/<domain>/messages); Groundmail takes one JSON body on POST /emails with a Bearer key. SMTP senders change the host to smtp.groundmail.dev:587. The Groundmail importer can bring suppressions, templates, domains and webhooks across from a Mailgun API key, and the Mailgun migration docs have the field mapping.
