SendGrid sells fixed tiers, so you pay for the tier above your volume. Its pricing page says overage charges may apply on top of the monthly rate but doesn't publish the per-email overage rates; ask SendGrid for the rate on your plan if your volume is spiky. Marketing Campaigns is a separate product with its own plans and isn't included in these prices.

Up to 100,000 a month the two list prices are within five cents of each other, so price isn't a reason to pick either one there. Above 100,000, SendGrid moves you to Pro, which includes a dedicated IP; Groundmail's Scale tiers run on the shared transactional pool and include a dedicated IP from 500,000 emails a month.

If you need a dedicated IP at around 100,000 emails a month, SendGrid Pro 100k at $89.95 is cheaper than Groundmail Scale 100k ($90) plus a $50/month IP.

Groundmail has a Free plan (3,000 emails a month), Pro at $20 for 50,000 or $35 for 100,000, and Scale from $90 for 100,000 up to $1,150 for 2,500,000, with overage from $0.90 down to $0.46 per 1,000. Every sending feature is on every plan.

When SendGrid is the right choice

  • You want marketing campaigns and API email from one vendor. SendGrid sells both; Groundmail is transactional only.
  • You want a dedicated IP at about 100,000 emails a month. Pro 100k includes one for $89.95.
  • You need an official Java or C# library. SendGrid has them; Groundmail doesn't (use the HTTP API or SMTP).
  • You want to try sending without a card. SendGrid's trial doesn't ask for one; Groundmail asks for a card before you send to other people.

Groundmail tends to fit better when you send 500,000 or more a month on shared IPs, want a free plan that doesn't expire, want published overage rates, or may later need a fully dedicated mail server on the same API. The full side-by-side is in Groundmail vs SendGrid.

Switching from SendGrid

Paste a SendGrid API key into the Groundmail importer to bring over suppressions, templates, domains and webhooks, or move by hand: swap the endpoint and key, flatten personalizations[] and content[] into to, subject, html and text, and point SMTP at smtp.groundmail.dev:587. The SendGrid migration guide walks through each step with a canary plan.
